Last week, an old friend from my time at Rolling Stone, Damian DeMartino, contacted me out of the blue for a pretty horrific illustration. Austin Monthly's new issue is all about ridiculous true stories, and mine centered around a collapsed lung being fixed via acid with no anesthesia. In the end it turned out pretty well, but for a while it was difficult to walk the line between making the image graphic/visceral enough to convey the story/entertain me, but not so disgusting that they wouldn't print it/think bad things about me. Thankfully, Orin Brecht, my wonderful Associate Art Director, helped me sort that little conundrum out.
